Corby Bridge Inn - things to do

Corby Bridge and the River Eden

There's lots to see and do when you stay with us. This page will provide some ideas for places to explore with links for further information. And if you run out of ideas while you're here, we can always suggest some more. Cumbria is a beautiful, historic county, and there's plenty to keep you occupied during your visit.

You mustn't come to visit us without walking the Corby Bridge. Built in the 1830s, its five arches carry the Carlisle - Newcastle railway a hundred feet above the River Eden. The five minute stroll provides spectacular views of the river and the coutryside to the north. If you want to walk or cycle a little further afield, you'll find an extensive list of suggestions here.

The historic city of Carlisle provides a wealth of things to do, and is just a few minutes to the west by car. The imposing castle has been a centrepiece of the wars between the English and the Scots over the centuries. Close by is the 12th century cathedral. Some of the history of Carlisle can be found on display at the Tullie House Museum, while if you're feeling energetic or want to be entertained by a show, the Sands Centre is the place to be.

If you've come to get away from the city, enjoy some of what the Cumbrian countryside has to offer. Talkin Tarn Country Park is the perfect spot for a stroll round the lake, some afternoon tea or a sail on the water. Lanercost Priory offers an interesting insight into the life of an Augustinian priory. It was here that Edward I spent his last winter before dying at Burgh-by-Sands on the Solway Estuary. Close by is Hadrian's Wall, the northern outpost of the Roman Empire. There's much to explore along the Wall, but one spot of note is Birdoswald Fort with its commanding view of the River Irthing. If retail therapy is your thing, but you can't face the city crowds, explore the market town of Brampton, less than 10 minutes to the east. There's a weekly market, some interesting places to eat, and a Tourist Information Centre for more inspiration.
